Planning a road trip for winter sports lovers

For many winter sports enthusiasts, planning a winter sports themed road trip has the potential to become the ultimate adventure – so, where to start planning? For many people, Austria is the perfect destination, but with so many great ski resorts to choose from, how should the list be narrowed down in order to get the most out of this ultimate adventure?  The good news is that nobody has to choose just one ski resort to visit: by making the vacation to Austria a road trip, multiple ski resorts can be packed into just one amazing journey.

Why a road trip in Austria?

Austria is renowned for its astounding roads with mountainous and picturesque views, so a driving tour of the country is worth considering for those who want to make the most of their time there to take in the scenery.

Those traveling by air to their resorts may need to hire items when they arrive so they can dramatically cut down on the amount of luggage they need in order to meet airline luggage weight requirements; however, traveling by car means that it is very easy to pack everything needed without this added worry.

Where to go?

Now back to what places are best to ski at – why not consider the Pitztal and the Tiroler Oberland?  The Pitztal glacier is a popular choice with skiers and those with their own transport can easily reach the slopes of Riflsee and Jerzens as well as Nauders and Samnaun, among others.  This region alone offers ski enthusiasts more than 500km of slopes.  Consider also the area around Serfaus – most people can easily spend a few days skiing here and by parking close to the Waldbahn lift station there is easy access to many different winter sports in this area.

Those who also want to take in some great scenery should head over to the Carinthia area of Austria.  This region is packed with lakes and mountains, and those who want to give the traditional winter holiday a twist can find amazing accommodation close to one of the beautiful lakes and enjoy the sunshine, while at the same time only be a 45 minute drive away from a number of different ski resorts. Turracher Höhe is known as a great day resort and features a tractor taxi and a bobsleigh track as well as the usual ski slopes.   Visitors can also head along the Salzburg motorway to Katschberg, close to other resorts such as Obertauern.

The right vehicle

Taking a winter road trip in Austria means that it is important to have the right vehicle.  The wintery conditions might put off most drivers, but with the right car it can be so much easier.  Taking a car all the way to Austria might not be the most cost effective option; so hiring a car is perhaps the best way to go.  Car hire in Austria is a good idea, as it will be a good assurance that the vehicle is fit for handling the wintery conditions.  Ask the car hire company if the vehicle has been fitted with winter tires, for example, and look carefully at the type of cars that are available to choose the right one for this trip.

With a destination in mind, a clear theme to dictate the direction, and a suitable car, planning the road trip of a lifetime will be a piece of cake. All that will be left to do, is to go and enjoy it!
